Wren Blae Zimmerman is a blind equestrian show jumper based in Lexington, KY. At 17, Wren was diagnosed with a rare incurable eye disease called Stargardt’s Macular Dystrophy and has since become legally blind. Since her diagnosis, Wren set out to pursue her lifelong dream of learning to ride and jump horses and now competes against able-bodied riders at rated shows. Her goal is to become the first blind person to compete in the sport of show jumping at the elite level here in North America. Wren is also an advocate of the emerging discipline of Para-Show Jumping, and over the past few years has been working on advancing the movement to achieve official recognition of the sport here in the US, with the ultimate goal of it becoming a Paralympic sport. Wren is also working to change the perception about what people with disabilities are capable of, in particular those with invisible disabilities, and raising awareness of visual impairment and blindness.
